The MTR on Wednesday evening suspended services at Sha Tin station after protesters vandalised station facilities and surrounded the control station.

They were demanding the railway explain allegations that MTR staff had roughly treated a young man who had jumped a ticket barrier.

Some protesters sprayed graffiti on a window of the customer service centre as others pounded on the door and demanded an explanation.

Soon, a large group of police arrived and subdued a number of protesters before taking them away. Some of the officers pushed journalists out of the way in the process.

The MTR said it decided to close the station temporary due to an “escalation of the situation” there, to “ensure the safety of passengers and our staff”.
