The Chief Executive Carrie Lam on Wednesday assured the business community that the spirit of Hong Kong will see the SAR through the current political crisis as she made a surprise appearance at a Belt and Road forum.

Lam took the stage of the summit at the Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai, much to the surprise of delegates as her name was not on the event’s agenda.

During her opening speech, the Chief Executive said she is confident that Hong Kong can return to stability and prosperity through the efforts of the government and the people.

“My fervent hope is that we can bridge our divide by upholding the One Country, Two systems principle, and the Basic Law, and through the concerted efforts of the government and the people of Hong Kong,” she said.

“I am confident we can do just that. Hong Kong, after all, has been built and rebuilt time and again on our indomitable resilience,” the top official told the delegates from business communities from many countries.

“Call it the Hong Kong spirit, I know it will see us through,” Lam said.

The two-day summit was jointly organised by the HK Trade Development Council and the SAR government.
