League of Social Democrats chairman Avery Ng and Demosisto chairman Ivan Lam have been given two-week suspended prison sentences for incitement and illegal assembly convictions over a protest outside Beijing’s liaison office in Western in 2016.

West Kowloon Magistracy had heard that the activists charged towards a police cordon set up during the protest, which was held to oppose Beijing’s interpretation of the Basic Law on Legco oath-taking.

Police had said that two officers were injured as around 4,000 people swarmed the area outside the liaison office on November 6, 2016.

Magistrate Peony Wong also gave Cheng Pui-lun, a former president of Lingnan University’s student union, a two-week suspended jail term for taking part in the unauthorised protest.

Five other participants in the demonstration were ordered to carry out 60 to 100 hours of community service.
