Round after round of tear gas was fired in Wong Tai Sin on Tuesday after protesters clad in black clashed repeatedly with armed police.

The anti-extradition bill protesters had called for a rally in the area and hundreds arrived to take part.

Protesters threw bricks and petrol bombs while police fired multiple rounds of tear gas, sometimes provoking the anger of nearby residents.

Firefighters were called in at one point after a line of motorbikes near a disciplinary staff quarters went up in flames, sending a pall of thick black smoke into the air.

Protesters clashed with police near Wong Tai Sin Square, Shatin Pass Road and Sheung Fung Street as rounds of tear gas were fired.

At one point, police used tear gas near an elderly care home, angering a few dozen residents, who shouted abuse at the officers.
