The market turned lower in the afternoon after reports said a Chinese trade delegation had cut short a trip to the United States. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 159 points after rising 100 points earlier.
Technology and communications companies fell broadly. Microsoft dropped 1.2 percent and Netflix lost 5.5 percent.
The S&P 500 dropped 0.5 percent to 2,992. It ended lower for the week, breaking a three-week winning streak.
The Dow fell 0.6 percent to 26,935. The Nasdaq dropped 0.8 percent to 8.117. Despite the losses, the major indexes are showing gains of around 2 percent for September. (AP)
